Air Canada’s legal department is regarded as a world-class, high-performing, in-house strategic resource. Under the leadership of David J. Shapiro, Senior Vice President, International and Regulatory Affairs and Chief Legal Officer, Air Canada’s legal department is a valued adviser, and has a key role in helping the company achieve its business strategies and outcomes.

We are looking for a lawyer to join our Labour and Employment Team in Montreal. Candidates should have experience in representing employers before tribunals and governmental authorities, representing employers in negotiations to resolve grievances and other proceedings, advising on the application of collective agreements, supporting collective bargaining, supporting internal investigations, conducting legal research, and delivering training to a wide range of clients, from front line employees to senior management on a wide range of labour and employment matters.

 
The successful candidate will be joining a team of experienced labour and employment law lawyers, paralegals and support staff. The successful candidate will be responsible for various tasks related to labour and employment law matters, including:

  • Representing Air Canada in labour arbitration (both in traditional and expedited formats), before the Canada Industrial Relations Board and the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal or their provincial counterparts, and in litigation before the Courts.
  • Drafting and reviewing correspondence and hearing documents (briefs, witness statements, written arguments, motion records, settlement documents, etc.) and ensuring comments and sign-off on these documents from various internal branches at Air Canada.
  • Investigating the background to inquiries, complainants and grievances.
  • Advising Air Canada on collective bargaining and supporting Air Canada bargaining teams in reaching advantageous agreements.
  • Preparing training materials and delivering training to internal clients on labour, employment, and human rights matters.
  • Maintaining and updating the tools and templates used by the Labour and Employment team.

Qualifications

  • Member of the Bar in at least one of the Canadian provinces or territories
  • Minimum of five to ten years of labour and employment practice in a law firm or in a large, corporate environment with a track record of success serving in a labour and employment law practice requiring legal advice and counsel on a broad range of issues.
  • Knowledge of federal labour law and procedure.
  • Strong business sense.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in English and French. A writing sample may be requested.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong negotiation and advocacy skills and experience in collective bargaining, grievance arbitration, and labour board proceedings; experience in human rights tribunal and judicial proceedings preferred.
  • Strong written skills and superior verbal communication skills to present and discuss business focused issues with both internal and external stakeholders in order to gain understanding, influence others and build relationships.
  • Candidates with a facility with Adobe, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, QuickLaw and other online legal research tools will be preferred.
  • Desire and ability to pursue continuous learning.
  • Willingness to ask questions and to seek information as needed to complete projects and tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and a rigorous approach to legal work.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize.
  • Strong time management skills, including the ability to work independently and to work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Project management skills, including the ability to adhere to strict project deadlines while being flexible as necessary in response to changes and delays.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others, ability to work as a team member and to interact successfully with people at all levels of the organization, including attorneys, clients and outside counsel.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, discretion and the ability to handle confidential information.
  • Drive for results and urgency and motivation towards achievement.
  • Fast and efficient work habits.
  • Capacity to work under pressure, displaying composure in stressful situations while managing multiple priorities.
  • Tenacity and resilience to persevere towards goals, despite challenges and obstacles, maintaining enthusiasm through to the attainment of the goals.
