Scope:

Reporting to the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Manager of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation will lead the development and implementation of Air Canada’s inaugural Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Strategy and Action Plan (“the Strategy”). 

Air Canada’s Reconciliation journey closely intersects and builds on our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion commitments. This position is foundational as we intentionally listen, learn, and reflect to build our knowledge and identify opportunities to support the advancement of Truth and Reconciliation. This position will be instrumental in guiding our approach and leading our efforts as we continue to develop and deepen meaningful, productive relationships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and organizations.

The Manager’s primary responsibility will include oversight of the internal organization-wide effort to develop the Strategy and the development of measurable activities, collaborating with internal colleagues on initiatives, establishing and supporting engagement activities with communities, and creating and reporting on key performance metrics to drive positive impact in advancing Truth and Reconciliation. 

The Manager will provide advice to the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and other colleagues involved in matters relating to the Strategy and its implementation. This position will also provide leadership in the development of relationships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and organizations, including the Air Canada Indigenous Employee Resource Group, oversee key metrics related to the Strategy and maintain an active and meaningful presence with Indigenous communities within Air Canada’s key regions of operations. The Manager will also be responsible for leading and supporting the development of key policies, procedures, and programming that relate to the implementation of the Strategy and recommending changes to further the Strategy, in future years.

Responsibilities: 

  • Drive reciprocal, long-term, multi-pronged Indigenous Relations, Reconciliation, and Indigenous inclusion opportunities aligned with Air Canada business needs while supporting Indigenous Peoples, communities, and organizations through alignment with Indigenous Ways of Knowing.
  • Lead the creation and implementation of Air Canada’s inaugural Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Strategy and Action Plan
  • Coordinate and facilitate learning and development opportunities for Air Canada colleagues to support a culture of inclusion and the advancement of Truth and Reconciliation. 
  • Partner with cross-functional internal departments to ensure strategic implementation of the Strategy.
  • Build and maintain open, honest, and respectful long-term relationships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and organizations.
  • Translate and project manage - work with various teams within Air Canada, and with external stakeholders when needed.
  • Continually challenge the status-quo by leading and identifying new approaches and strategies for how Air Canada can support Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Create project plans and apply project management methodology to programs and initiatives, including leveraging systems and tools (i.e. Google, survey tools, data analysis tools) to support success of the Strategy.
  • Balance numerous priorities while anticipating changes and adapting accordingly.

Qualifications

  • Self-identifies as Indigenous and/or has first-hand knowledge or experience living in and/or working with Indigenous communities is considered an asset. 
  • Brings experience and deep understanding of, and interest in, Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in what is now called Canada. 
  • Strategically minded with an ability to develop and implement innovative plans and ensure actions align with desired outcomes and impact, creating excitement and generating interest and engagement amongst internal and external rights-holders and stakeholders.
  • Passion for supporting knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of Indigenous Peoples in what is now called Canada.
  • Desire to support Truth and Reconciliation in a corporate environment.
  • Critical thinking skills and knowledge of Indigenous cultural protocols and ability to exercise cultural sensitivity while also conducting research and data analysis to inform business decisions.
  • Demonstrates project management skills with ability to manage multiple initiatives, timelines, and budget.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with experience writing for an external audience and reporting to executive audiences.
  • Proven track record for consistently delivering results while working within tight deadlines and effectively meeting program milestones while managing competing deadline pressures, ambiguity, and change.
  • Strong ability to bring groups together to navigate complex teams and collaborate with influence.
  • Demonstrates an ability to influence cross-functional groups to gain buy-in and effectively implement change management practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and negotiate with internal and external groups to maintain a competitive advantage.
