The Manager, Natural Resources & Biodiversity Programs leads the development and delivery of water conservation and illegal wildlife trade programs within the Corporation and its subsidiaries system wide to ensure environmental compliance obligations and certification requirements and to meet formally stated environmental goals of the Corporation within the following key areas (but not limited to):
- Water conservation in facilities (domestic)
- Water conservation onboard aircraft
- Water conservation in water-stressed regions
- Illegal Wildlife trade (cargo and mainline operations)
- Specific aviation-related natural resources and biodiversity opportunities (e.g., water conservation aircraft technologies, new IWT detection technologies and IWT awareness projects).
Key Functions:
Natural Resources
- Responsible for the development and implementation of water conservation programs, in co-operation with the branches and subsidiaries, to ensure continuous improvement and meet goals and objectives in support of formally stated environmental goals of the Corporation and mitigating reputation risk to the Corporation
- Conducts evaluation of current water consumption status (facility and aircraft) and interfaces with appropriate corporate branches
- Develops project scopes and objectives with internal and external stakeholders’ input and ensures technical feasibility. Provides expertise in the selection of appropriate water conservation program opportunities for the Corporation.
- Develops project plan and tracks progress toward achievement of objectives and targets. Prepares reports for senior management on progress and options for improvement.
- Conducts water audits and tracks, trends, and analyzes relevant data for performance measurement and reporting (such as Global Reporting Index, other), and maintains water data collection system.
- Conducts research analysis to develop strategies for policy development.
- Responsible for the review of the TNFD framework and leading the identification exercise of nature-related risks to the corporation.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of new natural resource programs as applicable.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of environmental awareness programs related to water conservation. Provides direction and advice to all Branches or subsidiaries on water conservation.
- Develops communications and awareness materials geared toward a variety of stakeholders, including internal branches as part of EMS requirements and engages employees around water conservation practices to help build a culture of environmental stewardship and to drive performance within Air Canada.
- Ensures all policy and program documentation is maintained up to date within requirements of the EMS.
- Manage outside consultants as applicable to environmental programs assigned. This would include vendor identification, RFP development, selection, and ongoing oversight and management of vendor work.
- Acts as representative of the Corporation at meetings related to water conservation at various industry associations (i.e., IATA).
- Assists the Director, Environment Management Programs in the preparation of quarterly environmental reports to the Corporate Safety and Environmental Board and the Safety, Health, Environment and Security Committee of the Board of Directors.
- Assists the Director Environment Management Programs in the determination of consequential cost and process implications related to water conservation and ensures the development of plans and the allocation of appropriate funds to address upcoming changes.
- Develops and maintains a strong network of internal contacts within key Branches (CRE, Finance, Operating Branches, Corporate Groups, etc.) and a strong network of professional contacts in the field of water conservation through business networks, regulators, and existing project work in order to optimize Air Canada’s environmental efforts.
- Continually maintain a high level of professional proficiency and knowledge of all applicable environmental matters, sustainability requirements, technologies, and developments. Shares good practices and problems/lessons learned with colleagues, branches, and alliance carriers.
Biodiversity
- Responsible for the development, implementation, and expansion of the corporate illegal wildlife trade program, in co-operation with the branches and subsidiaries, to ensure continuous improvement and meet goals and objectives in support of formally stated environmental goals of the Corporation and mitigating reputation risk to the Corporation
- Conducts evaluation of illegal wildlife trade program status and interfaces with appropriate corporate branches, government, and NGOs
- Develops the project scopes and objectives for expansion of the current IWT program to the front line operations.
- Develops the project scopes and objectives with internal and external stakeholders’ input and ensures technical feasibility. Provides expertise in the selection of appropriate opportunities to fight the illegal wildlife trade for the Corporation.
- Develops project plan and tracks progress toward achievement of objectives and targets. Prepares reports for senior management on progress and options for improvement.

Qualifications
- University degree in Environmental Sciences or equivalent
- 4-5 years minimum experience in the field of environment and/or environment-related activities and/or project management
- Experience in biodiversity and/or conservation of natural resources or knowledge is required.
- A demonstrated ability to influence, persuade and convince others and develop, engage, and maintain effective partnerships with diverse stakeholder groups.
- Ability to manage projects, demonstrate initiative and able to work independently.
- Must have excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
- Commitment to quality and pride in work, patience, and perseverance
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Programs and Share Point
- Must be available and able to travel domestically and internationally as required.
- Bilingual is an asset.
