As part of the Corporate Environmental Affairs Team, the Waste Reduction and Circularity Projects Manager will provide subject matter expertise, the implementation, and continued development of waste reduction, diversion, and circular economy projects across Air Canada’s operations to meet corporate objectives and regulatory requirements. 
 
Accountabilities:
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of effective circular economy, waste diversion, and waste reduction programs and initiatives:
  • Provide subject matter expertise for the implementation of Air Canada’s Leave Less Cabin project and various other circular economy initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for, develop, and implement various sustainability initiatives including new circular economy projects by working closely with a range of internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Manage the implementation and tracking of other waste programs including reuse and donation programs, stewardship reporting obligations, and recycling projects in offices and facilities. 
  • Research upcoming and existing relevant waste regulations in Canada and internationally, including single use plastics and extended producer responsibility programs.
  • Conduct annual cabin waste audits and support initiatives to improve audit design and tracking of on-board waste.
  • Collect, input, and transform data to develop reports that distill complex data into actionable insights to inform design, planning, and implementation of waste and circularity programs.
  • Develop and implement environmental awareness and training programs related to waste management. 
  • Ensures all policy and program documentation is maintained up to date within requirements of the EMS.  
Efforts:
  • Given this position is in a rapidly evolving field, it requires a high level of analysis and problem solving skills and effort. The incumbent will be responsible for taking decisions in their day-to-day management of projects and programs and is expected to be able to work with limited supervision.
  • The job requires some level of physical effort in the installation, shipping and maintenance of recycling bins and manipulation of other containers and products in office and facilities. The waste audits also require some level of physical effort. 
Working Conditions: 
  • The employee will primarily work in an office environment but is called upon to work in hangar, aircraft and catering facilities to conduct waste audits. Waste audits requires sorting through onboard refuse and catering trolley.  
  • The position will likely result in a medium level of mental stress & pressure resulting from having to research environmental solutions to manage various waste streams and managing multiple projects at the same time involving multiple stakeholders. This position is in a rapidly evolving field and therefore requires adaptability and resilience. 

Qualifications

  • Completed university: Bachelor or Master of Environmental Studies, Engineering, Natural Resources, Social Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of strategy, planning, and implementation of environmental and sustainability projects and experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced understanding of waste diversion interventions, circular economy principles, and corporate sustainability objectives.  
  • Proficiency with MS Office, particularly Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel. PowerBi 
  • Self-motivated and organized; able to simultaneously work on multiple assignments and to work both independently as well as on teams. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to articulate issues, give presentations, and prepare written reports.
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English and French required. Able and willing to travel domestically and internationally as required.
