We have an innovative legal and compliance team, comprised of more than 80 dedicated professionals, that participates as business partners to support Air Canada’s strategic objectives. We are looking for a Customer, Regulatory and Resolution counsel to join our team of professionals in Montreal.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of initiatives supporting our business and operations. The position will require the counsel to possess and develop expertise in diverse areas of the law, such as passenger related regulatory aviation and litigation, consumer and advertising, and environmental law As part of the responsibilities for this position, the counsel will: 
 
  • Analyse legal frameworks in consumer law in Canada and internationally, identify risks and opportunities for Air Canada, provide advice to business units to manage regulatory impact, and drive regulatory compliance initiatives. 
  • Support and help define Air Canada’s strategic approach to new regulatory initiatives in Canada and internationally, draft position statements, garner support from international partners, and coordinate industry response as needed. 
  • Manage and supervise litigation files in Canada, before the Canadian Transportation Agency and other tribunals in Canada and in various countries, in collaboration with paralegals and external counsel, including drafting and reviewing legal proceedings. 
  • Provide legal advice to business units on new initiatives, and develop creative legal solutions to support commercial priorities.

Qualifications

  • Two to five years of relevant experience in a major law firm or an established in-house legal department, with specific experience in litigation. 
  • While we do not require candidates to possess all areas of expertise and will provide training in those required, experience in at least some of the following areas is required: passenger or consumer related aviation and regulatory law, e-commerce, advertising and environmental law.

Solid academic credentials and a proven track record must be demonstrated.  Membership in the Bar of a Canadian Province is essential and common and civil law training is an asset.  Integrity (including a strong work ethic, high personal standards, discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information, dedication to follow through on commitments, and openness and honesty in communications as well as a respectful demeanor) is assumed.  The successful candidate will be one who takes pride in their role as a representative of Canada’s flag carrier.
