Reporting to the Senior Manager, Climate Change and Aircraft Noise, the incumbent will act as the subject matter expert in the area of sustainable energy and fuels, will support policy and standards development, and ensure regulatory compliance for all aspects of their accountabilities. 

This position will be focused on the following areas: renewable energy and sustainable/low-carbon fuels with regards to Air Canada’s Climate Action Plan, including GHG accounting but could be called to support other areas within environmental affairs for Air Canada and its subsidiaries.

This position will also be accountable to develop and lead projects within the portfolio of climate change and be responsible for interfacing with multiple stakeholders internally and externally as applicable (Corporate customers, industry associations and others), to ensure successful outcomes for Air Canada. This position will also support internal stakeholders by providing expertise in the above-mentioned areas.  

This position may be located in Montreal, Toronto Calgary and/or Vancouver. 

Functional Accountabilities 

  • Develops and coordinates the sustainable and low-carbon aviation fuels strategy: 
  • Develops and maintains Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) policy standard and regulatory knowledge, including book-and-claim/mass-balance program development 
  • Assesses and projects upcoming mandatory SAF requirements to meet compliance obligations in collaboration with the Manager, Climate Change Programs
  • Works with Fuel Procurement on SAF specifications, certification, and agreements 
  • Manages, maintains Air Canada’s SAF Registry and coordinates Air Canada’s SAF Registry third-party verification            
  • Provide subject matter expertise in influencing the development of domestic and international environmental policies, standards and regulations related to sustainable aviation fuels and renewable energy. 
  • Provides subject matter expertise in the implementation of Air Canada’s Climate Change Action Plan in co-operation with Business units and the Climate Action Plan Program Manager:
  • Provides expertise for GHG reductions accounting from renewable energy and sustainable/low-carbon fuels usage and purchase
  • Coordinates the renewable energy task force (RECs, PPA, VPPA, onsite renewable energy generation), and provides recommendation to the business
  • Provides expertise for the implementation of the Leave Less Travel Program with regards to SAF
  • Monitors emerging technologies and best practices from around the world and conducts research analysis for policy development and shares this knowledge with internal stakeholders.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and inter-branch coordination in developing project plan, business cases, and identification of external funding sources and application.
  • Develop and maintain a strong relationship and promote environmental stewardship with Stations and Business units as main contact person for environmental issues and concerns related to area of responsibility.  
  • Participates and represents Environmental Affairs at various internal working groups.
  • Continually maintains a high level of professional proficiency and knowledge of all environmental matters, regulations, technologies, and developments. Shares good practices and problems/lessons learned with colleagues, branches, and alliance carriers.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Petrochemical or Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sciences or equivalent.
  • Minimum 4 years experience in renewable energy, sustainable and/or low-carbon fuels. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of renewable energy generation, sustainable and/or low-carbon fuels production.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of GHG accounting from renewable energy generation, sustainable and/or low-carbon fuels production.
  • Knowledge of current Provincial and Federal environmental legislations, regulations and policies related to clean and low-carbon fuels, and related industry best practices.
  • Knowledge of GHG standards (ISO14064-1/-2/-3 or equivalent), an asset.
  • Highly developed facilitation and negotiation skills, including an ability to foster strong relationships with and manage internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven project management skills involving multiple departments with exceptional problem solving, analytical, organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong ability to prioritize activities and excellent time management and organizational.
  • Commitment to quality and pride in work, patience, and perseverance.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in rapidly changing environments or uncertain conditions.
  • Ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate others’ concerns and feelings, and to communicate this awareness empathetically to others.
