Responsible for managing the design, development and analysis aspects of aircraft weight and balance (standards, procedures and data) in accordance with aircraft manufacturers' Weight and Balance Manuals (WBM), IATA Airport Handling Manual (AHM) as well as Transport Canada regulations. He/she is also responsible for providing expert technical consultation and support to other branches as required in all matters involving weight and balance.


This position may be located in Toronto or Montreal.  

  • Establish, implement and maintain load control policies and standards for aircraft operated by Air Canada, Air Canada rouge as well as contract carriers.
  • Develop and implement load planning procedures that are consistent with the computerized weight and balance system used by the Weight and Balance department.
  • Perform detailed weight and moment calculations for changes in aircraft configuration or operational items.
  • Perform center of gravity envelope curtailment calculations.
  • Maintain computerized weight and balance system databases so that they reflect current aircraft loading configurations.
  • Establish and maintain standard passenger and baggage weights in accordance with AHM procedures.
  • Develop and maintain Air Canada's Load Planning manuals, which provide aircraft-specific instructions and data pertaining to load planning, load distribution and cargo hold limitations in accordance with manufacturers' Weight and Balance Manuals.
  • Provide instructions to maintenance personnel concerning aircraft weighings.
  • Prepare aircraft weight and balance reports and statements.
  • Provide special loading instructions for flights that do not meet the usual set of assumptions and/or conditions upon which normal loading instructions are based.
  • Estimate operational empty weights of projected aircraft configurations in support of Aircraft Performance for the purpose of conducting payload-range analyses.
  • Develop, test and deploy IT solutions, such as the weight ledger system, for the calculation, storage and dissemination of operational weight and balance data; adapt these IT solutions to the needs of internal users such as flight crews and load agents.
  • Train and support Technicians, Aircraft Performance in the preparation of weight and balance reports and statements, as well as the maintenance of aircraft, passenger and baggage weight data in the computerized weight and balance system.
  • Participate in industry working groups, such as IATA's Load Control & Messaging Task Force (LCAM).
  • Foster a culture that values excellence in technical expertise, ethical behaviour, business development, customer centricity and productive teamwork.
  • Conduct data maintenance on the Route Analysis Program by ensuring that Operating Empty Weights, galley/passenger/baggage weight and baggage ratios are accurately recorded and revised when necessary.
  • Provide support to aircraft and operational item weight saving proposals.
  • Respond to weight and balance operational inquiries.
  • Perform duties of the designated Weight and Balance representative as described in the Aircraft Performance Procedures Manual (APPM), including acting as Process Improvement Leader for all weight and balance processes.

 

Qualifications

  • Technical degree or bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of multi-engine commercial jet aircraft load planning principles.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in an air operator's load control or weight and balance department.
  • Strong computer skills, more specifically with Microsoft Excel, VBA programming skills and Autodesk AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with requirements and regulations surrounding air carriage of live animals and dangerous goods.
  • Good understanding of airline business and operations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Smart4Aviation's SmartLOAD computerized weight and balance system, an asset.
  • Drive for results, sense of urgency towards achievement of goals.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work autonomously and under pressure, displaying composure in difficult situations.
  • Strong customer-centric approach.
  • Adept at interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Passion for technical accuracy.
  • Ability to look beyond technical tasks to focus on business objectives.
  • Desire to participate as part of a team and initiative to involve team members when appropriate.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (French an asset).
  • Familiarity with Air Canada's load control systems and procedures, an asset.
  • Knowledge of statistics, an asset.
