Responsible to the Manager, Flight Standards. This position provides the necessary Subject Matter Expert support to fulfill the department’s mandate for operational standardization, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, audit and Quality Assurance roles, and support of C-Series operations.

  • Manage SMS responsibilities in accordance with the Corporate Safety Management Manual and the Flight Operations Safety and Quality Manual.
  • Assist in aircraft trend analysis from sources including FDA, ASRs, SIMS and if applicable, ensure corrective action taken is followed and effective;
  • Assist Corporate Safety Environment & Quality in the conduct of process audits in line with Branch Quality procedures.
  • Assist Corporate Safety Environment & Quality in conducting Risk Analyses for SOP changes;
  • Research and support policy development, review and process suggested policy initiatives;
  • Assess and report to the Manager, Flight Standards any impact of changes to regulations, operating rules, or related regulatory guidance;
  • Provide guidance on fleet wide operating procedures, including the introduction of new aircraft types, routes, destinations, technologies, procedures, and techniques to ensure they are coordinated and standardized;
  • Support Corporate Safety, Environment, and Quality in the completion of IATA Operational Safety Audits (IOSA) or programs;
  • Provide guidance for required changes to Aircraft Operating Manual (AOM) and Flight Operations Manual (FOM);
  • Review draft revisions to the FOM ;
  • Review and approve ATBs;
  • Participate in working groups related to department responsibilities;
  • Represent Air Canada at Transport Canada and industry meetings related to department responsibilities;
  • Provide material for Flight Operations Standards Update and related communications to the pilot group;
  • Participate in Standards Pilots Meetings as required;
  • Represent the Senior Director, Flying Operations as Duty Pilot to oversee operational issues;
  • Conduct administrative duties as directed by Manager, Flight Standards ;
  • Fulfill responsibilities as outlined in Publication 400, Emergency Response Procedures 


  • University entrance minimum; university degree or college diploma preferred.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and oral English at an advanced level (University Degree equivalent) - level 4.
  • Formal training in Aviation Quality Auditing or Technical Writing an asset.
  • Ability to use MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, electronic mail efficiently.
  • Extensive background in Air Canada Flight Operations.
  • At least 5 years as a qualified pilot at Air Canada and/or other Part 705 Canadian Air Operator. Airline Transport Pilot License endorsed for the Aircraft Type required by the position.
  • In depth knowledge of Part 705 operations. Knowledge of Canadian Aviation
  • Regulations and associated Commercial Air Services Standards, IATA Organizational Safety Audits (IOSA), Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), and Star Alliance Best Practices.
  • Must demonstrate high level of competency in areas of: policy formulation, interpersonal skills, writing skills, organizational skills, and leadership capabilities.
